Choose Your Words Wisely – The art of Writing a Wedding Invitation

With bundles of paper and envelopes carefully arranged, it’s time to write your words. Remember the golden rule: choose them wisely.

It goes without saying that the words on your wedding invitations are important. Not only do they announce the event, they contain the who, what and where details. So, what are the must have snippets of info you need to include?

  • The names of the bride and groom
  • Wedding day and date
  • Ceremony time and venue (with address details)
  • Reception time and venue (with address details)

Names – Who Goes First?

If you want to follow a traditional invite format you will usually start your invitation with the names of the bride’s parents. According to etiquette it is the hosts of the wedding whose names are first, ie. the people paying for the event.

You could write something like:

“With great joy

Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Smith

invite you to the wedding of their daughter

Isabelle Clare Smith

 Dennis Frederick Williams

son of Mr. and Mrs. David Williams.”

If you like tradition but don’t want to list the names of your parents, simply write:

“Together with their families…”

Perhaps you want to shun tradition and completely personalise your invites. If this is the case, get creative.

“Two years ago we got engaged and now it’s time to marry.

Join us as we say ‘I do’ and celebrate with feasting, dancing and the clinking of champagne flutes.

Love, Katie & Ben”

Time, Date and Location

Triple check the day and date of your wedding. No doubt you have it lodged in your brain forever but you don’t want to waste all that glorious paper and ink by writing Sunday instead of Saturday. Industry professionals also advise couples to reconfirm the date and time with the ceremony and reception venue. You can never have enough reassurance.

Try something like this:

“Saturday, July 23rd 2012

at 4 o’clock in the afternoon

at Mount Rainbow Lodge

35 Raven Way, Red Valley

Dinner, dancing & merriment to follow”

“Saturday The Twenty Third of July

Two Thousand and Twelve

At Four O’Clock In The Afternoon

St Simon Church,

Richmond St, Sydney

Followed by Feasting and Dancing at

Red House Inn, Valley Road”

Check, Check, Check

Before you get writing or printing make sure you have a few people read-over the wording to check for spelling and grammatical errors. If you are unsure about the spelling of a guest’s name, confirm the correct spelling before you send the invite, it shows you care.

What’s Your Type?

There is a certain personal appeal to handwritten invites. It definitely proves that you have put in the hours to create beautiful stationery. However, if you are choosing to have the text printed, you have to decide on a font. Remember you should choose a font that is readable over one that is decorative, a blend of aesthetics and practicality is possible! To create a perfect blend, print the guests’ names in a fancy, scripted font and have the rest of the information in a type that is plain and legible.

Karen Tran Book Launch in Sydney

038 Karen Tran Book Launch 3.12.15 INLIGHTEN-1

Few floral stylists have a reputation like Karen Tran. From humble beginnings, this talented florist has grown a somewhat cult following across the globe. The likes of Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram, have seen her signature floral creations shared, regrammed and pinned a thousand times over, while Karen Tran herself spreads the floral love with educational workshops, that florists and stylists readily travel the distance to attend.

It was with great pleasure that we welcomed Karen Tran to Sydney last week, in celebration of the floral guru’s new book – Wedding Flowers. It certainly wouldn’t have been a reception for Karen Tran without some spectacular flowers. Local Sydney florist Elizabeth of Sydney Wedding Flowers attended Karen Tran’s workshop in Bali and set the scene at Dockside’s Italian Village, along with Nadia of Events by Nadia. Inlighten Photography was there to capture the elegant evening and we thought you might like a little peek of the gorgeous floral styling. It’s dream wedding inspiration!

The Meeting…

We met by coincidence at a petrol station when I was with my friend. My friend’s husband has been friends with Dennis for more than 10 years. When my friend introduced us at the petrol station, she highlighted that we were both single! The next day Dennis asked my friend for my number.

Wedding Style…

Our wedding combined western and eastern culture. We had a traditional church wedding with a colour theme of white and red. Red is a Chinese wedding colour and it means happiness. One of the most significant Chinese wedding events we had was the tea ceremony, which was before the reception. We held our tea ceremony at Roseville Golf Club’s beautiful courtyard, which overlooks the golf course. During the tea ceremony the bride is formally introduced to the groom’s family. In the middle of the reception I also changed to a red Chinese style dress.

Wedding Reception…

Roseville Golf Club

Wedding Dress…

I wore a huge A-line dress, with Sabtina neckline and three-quarter lace sleeves, crystals, and pearls on the sleeves and bodice. The skirt is almost 100cm long with eleven layers and the top layer has sequins on it. I think it was great for a church wedding because it is classic and doesn’t leave too much bare.

Bridesmaids’ Dresses…

The bridesmaids wore pink tea-length dress, with three-quarter lace sleeves to match my wedding gown.

The groom wore a black dinner suit with white vest and bowtie from Rembrandt. The groomsmen wore black suits and black bow ties.

The bridesmaids’ bouquets were white and pink roses and some pink berries. My bouquet was white and red roses with some red berries.

Wedding Decorations…

The venue colour theme was also white and red. I had white and red flowers for each table. I made most of the stationery myself – menu card, table number, seat location map, guests’ name cards etc. All the stationery featured a Chinese double happiness print.

On the Menu…

Slow Cooked Pork Belly, Asian cress, Nahm Jim

Barramundi, dill and preserved lemon ravioli, citrus Beurre blanc

Roasted Fillet of Angus Beef, Kalamata Mash, Crisp Pancetta, Salsa Verde

Seared Atlantic Salmon, Celery and Apple Slaw, Chilli and Lime Dressing

Sticky Banana Pudding, Butterscotch Sauce, Vanilla Bean Cream

Wattle Seed Crème Brulee, Pecan Biscotti

Wedding Cake…

Dennis’ sister made the cake, and it was a three tier chocolate cake with two little figures on top. We used more than 3kg of dark chocolate for the cake. It was her 1st time making such a big cake, it wasn’t the best, but full of love.

Wedding Favours…

Chocolate in a silver box that had a red Chinese double happiness on top.

Special Memories…

One of the most memorable moments was our first dance, it was the first time we have danced together since we met. Another memorable moment was Dennis’ speech. It made his sister and I cry. It was a great speech, I had never seen Dennis talk like this.

We also had so much fun driving the golf cart around, it was the first time for us.

Wedding Photography…

Clovergraphy. The price is good and they take good photos. The photographer Kevin also took our pre-wedding photos, he is a very nice and professional photographer. We had our photo shoots at the golf course and it was absolutely beautiful with the sunset, grass and the little lake.

Wedding Songs…

Most of the songs we used for the night are from the 80’s, because both of us like old songs.

Marry you – Bruno Mars

Make you feel my love – Adele

Young and beautiful- Lana Del Rey

Home- Michael Buble

Halo- Beyonce

Sugar sugar- Archies

Everything – Michael Buble

Slice of Heaven- Dave Dobbyn

Dancing queen- Abba

Dynamite- Taio Cruz

Crazy in love -Beyonce

We haven’t been on our honeymoon yet, but we will go to Japan in September for our honeymoon and second wedding in China.

The Meeting…

We met at a high school party and became close friends. Everyone else could see what we had, but we were in denial. It took a drunken kiss and I guess you could say the rest is history…

The Proposal…

It was our 4 year anniversary and Mitchell planned a surprise dinner cruise on Nelson Bay. Afterwards we got ice cream and went for a walk along the wharf where he got down on one knee and proposed – I still to this day haven’t given him an answer as I was too overwhelmed!

Wedding Style…

Our day was about bringing all our family and friends together in one huge celebration of LOVE with lots of dancing and laughter.

From the outset, we wanted the day to have a rustic/vintage theme. We hired Paramount Event Hire who shared our vision and styled and set everything up exactly like we envisioned.

Wedding Ceremony + Reception Venue…

The ceremony and reception were held at Raffertys Resort. The lakeside provided the perfect backdrop for exchanging our vows. The bridesmaids and I arrived to the ceremony by yacht much to the surprise and delight of Mitchell and the guests.

We both wanted the venue to overlook the water and loved the idea of the ceremony and reception being at the same location with the option for guest accommodation. After visiting Raffertys Resort, we instantly knew it was ‘the’ venue even though it was the first place we looked at!

The ceremony was followed by outdoor games, a cheese table and canapés while the bridal party had photographs on the yacht and around the resort. The reception was then held in The Jetty Restaurant overlooking the water.

We couldn’t recommend Alex and the event team at Raffertys highly enough, they went above and beyond and nothing was too much.

The Dress…

The wedding gown was a sweetheart strapless fitted gown with french chantilly lace covered with beaded lace and swarovski beads. The dress was made by Melanie Ford and was inspired by the J’aton dress Jodi Gordon wore. The dress was seriously incredible, Melanie is extremely talented and brought my dream dress vision to life.

The bridesmaids wore watermelon coloured dresses from White Runway with nude heels, pearl braclets and drop earrings.

The Flowers…

Peter Herd and his team did the flowers, I had my heart set on peonies, but they aren’t in season in February. I showed Peter some photos I found on Pinterest and he saw my vision and created everything better than I imagined – he is amazing!

Wedding Cake…

The cake was three tiered and made by a friend. We had a white chocolate and raspberry mud cake layer, a caramel mud cake and marbled chocolate and caramel mud cake layer.

Special Memories…

The entire day was so memorable and so much fun, the highlight for Mitch was when I arrived by yacht to the ceremony.

We had surprise fireworks for the guests which were mesmerising and we both have two left feet so took dancing lessons and did a choreographed fun first dance!

Wedding Songs…

We had the incredibly talented Jerome O’Connor sing ‘A Thousand Years’ by Christina Perri as I walked down the aisle which brought many tears. Jerome is also the lead singer in the band Master Blaster that played at the reception. A good band can bring so much atmosphere to a wedding reception and Master Blaster definitely did that, I don’t think there was one of our 150 guests that didn’t get up and dance!

We spent 10 nights in the Maldives in an overwater bungalow which was simply breathtaking. We went diving, snorkelled with whale sharks and mantra rays, ate really good food and just relaxed!

Wedding Photography…

We chose Something Blue Photography as we loved their candid style, and fell in love with their natural ‘unposed’ work and our images truly capture the moments of our day as they happen. We are so in love with our photos.

We approached Morelife Media after being referred by a close friend. Having a videographer capture our day was one of the best decisions we made. It truly brings the day’s memories back.

We also had a photobooth by Mat Glover Photography which was so much fun!

Rocket Events on Cocktail Weddings

Rocket Events on Cocktail Weddings

To cocktail or not to cocktail? It can be at tricky decision whether to celebrate your wedding with a traditional sit down meal or a mingling cocktail event. We asked wedding events expert Penny Miller of Rocket Events to weigh in on the debate and share her thoughts on the cocktail wedding…

Why would someone choose to have a cocktail celebration?

There are many reasons bride and groom’s choose a cocktail wedding over a sit down celebration, but I find,  the main reason is the number of guests and the venue they have chosen, they want all their friends and family there, and a cocktail event allows for a larger group of guests.

What do you see as the advantages of a cocktail wedding?

The advantages are the decorations and choice of venue, you can have a lot of fun with theming and dressing up a room, from unique pieces, to vintage style, from a small gathering to a lavish event, there are not limits, and venues always have the space for a cocktail event.

Outdoor Cocktail Wedding

Have cocktail weddings changed in recent years?

Yes, for sure, bride and groom’s really put a lot of thought into cocktail weddings, they love the idea of choosing what style they like, daytime or evening, chill out lounges, flowers, band or DJ, people love choices and having a cocktail wedding allows for many different options.

What do you love about cocktail weddings?

I love the fact that you can go into an empty space or blank canvas and turn the area into something totally amazing.

Cocktail Wedding Decor

Are there any cocktail wedding ideas you’ve seen recently and love?

I love dessert and lolly buffet’s, the more the better, and guests love it.  I have seen people open there handbags and drop a few extra lollies in there for the trip home, it’s priceless.

What does a couple need to consider when planning a cocktail wedding?

You need to consider options when you are using an outdoor area, plan B is a must.  Oh and always consider that all your guests will be coming, everyone loves a good wedding, and cocktail weddings are known to keep going to the wee hours of the morning.

Cocktail Wedding

Is there any sort of wedding etiquette associated specifically with a cocktail wedding?

Our parents and grandparents, or older friends, need comfortable lounge furniture to relax in and catch up with the family.  Older guests won’t stay if they have to lean on a bar table or share an ottoman, they want to stay till the end, but in comfortable seating.

So what will it be for you – cocktail or sit down?

You can find out more about setting up a unique space for a cocktail wedding at

How to Create A Unique Gents Wedding Ring

Larsen Jewellery Mens Wedding Rings

It would be fair to say that us ladies have an abundance of choice when it comes to anything fashion. You only have to look into any modern female’s wardrobe to see evidence of an array of colours, textures and styles. The other extreme is your typical guys wardrobe. If my partner’s wardrobe is an example then the average male wardrobe will consist of a selection of t-shirts in block colours or stripes, a selection of shirts for those more formal occasions, jeans, shorts and perhaps a suit; the bare basics of a female wardrobe. Why is this? Is it because of lack of choice? Or do men just like to keep it simple?

The same can generally be said when it comes to jewellery. Women again have endless, constantly evolving options. The choices, once again, for men are more limited.

When you consider engagement and wedding rings the contrast is once again obvious, ladies tend to have beautiful sparkling engagement and wedding ring sets and men will typically wear a classic gold plain wedding ring. This is men normally opting for a understated and timeless ring. However, the traditional choice, is less frequent now with the evolving designs and todays’ man wanting a little bit more personality in their jewellery. More men are becoming more expressive and experimental with what they wear. So it is understandable that there are some men who are after something a little different when it comes to their wedding ring.

If you are a guy or your fiancée to be falls into this category then considering a custom made ring might be the best option for you. Custom design means that your choices are limited only by your own imagination. At Larsen Jewellery we are experienced in working with our clients to come up with designs that suit both their needs and style requests.

If you are after a unique custom-made gents wedding ring, here are our most helpful tips to get you on your way:

First things first… What is your style? Modern, industrial, edgy… The list goes on. Flick through magazines or scroll the Internet for a bit of inspiration. It is always helpful to go to a custom made appointment with an idea of what you are after. But not to fear if you still have no idea because sometimes trying on a ring or two will point you in the right direction too.

Diamonds or Gemstones

Diamonds are not exclusive to women. A gents wedding ring is the perfect item of jewellery to add a touch of dazzle! This can be as bold or subtle as you like and you are not limited to white diamonds. Black diamonds can make a fantastic masculine choice. For a discreet look, set a stone into the inside or the side of your ring.

Decide on what color metal you want and go from there. (Today) The most popular choice is white metals. The two most popular white metal choices are white gold and platinum. If a white metal is not for you then the traditional yellow gold or rose gold are the next most popular and versatile options.

If you prefer the industrial look or are after an extremely hardwearing yet light metal you might opt for titanium. An added bonus, titanium is one of the most affordable metals. It is important to advise that whilst titanium has many benefits it cannot be soldered and therefore cannot be resized or altered down the track. This also means that some designs may be limited.

Mix Your Metals

Combining coloured metals to create a striking contrast looks fantastic. A really unique style of mixed metals is Mokume Gane. Mokume Gane is a traditional Japanese technique where different coloured metals are layered and worked in a way that creates a stunning wood grain effect. There are an array of colour combinations, white gold with silver, white and yellow gold with silver, white and rose gold with silver, or a stunning palladium and yellow gold!

Larsen Jewellery Mens Rings

Hand engraved jewellery is like what a tattoo is to skin – the perfect way to personalise your ring and give it that touch of you. We have even had someone’s tattoo pattern engraved into a ring! Choose written text, patterns or an image. You will be amazed at what an experienced hand engraver can create.

Textures and Finish

Not everyone loves a traditional high polished finish and if you are a guy who uses his hands a lot this may not be the best option for you! The finish of your ring can completely change the look of your ring. A matte finish will give a lovely soft, flat appearance, if you are like most men and don’t like to draw too much attention to yourself this could be a great option for you. Textured finishes such as a hammer finish look great and wear really well over time.

The best way to create a unique wedding ring is to experiment (be open to anything) with different combinations of metals, surface treatments, gemstones and engraving. Don’t be shy to voice your ideas to your jeweller, no matter how crazy they may seem to you. At Larsen Jewellery we love the chance to create something unique. One of our jewellers will work with you to bring your ideas together to form a truly unique piece.

Special thanks to Larsen Jewellery for sharing their tips and advice with us! For more male (and female!) wedding ring inspiration be sure to follow Larsen Jewellery on Instagram @larsenjewellery and check them out on Facebook.
